Plastic pipe extrusion lines for PE and PVC look similar at first glance, yet they are engineered for completely different processing requirements, which directly decides product performance and suitable markets. Choosing the correct line is essential for manufacturers to avoid unstable production and defective pipes.

The core difference lies in the extruder configuration. PE pipe machines adopt single-screw extruders. PE (HDPE) is thermally stable pellet material; the barrier screw provides gentle melting and uniform plasticization. Longer cooling tanks and stronger vacuum calibration are equipped because HDPE has large shrinkage after melting. In contrast, PVC is heat-sensitive powder compound, so PVC pipe lines mostly use conical twin-screw extruders. Twin screws deliver low-shear mixing and degassing to prevent PVC decomposition and yellowing during extrusion. PVC lines usually have shorter cooling sections and belling units for socket joints, which are rarely required for PE pipes.

Their application scenarios are separated clearly. PE pipes feature outstanding flexibility, impact resistance and leak-free heat-fusion joints. They are widely used for buried water supply, natural gas transportation, trenchless directional drilling, agricultural irrigation and mining pipelines. PE pipes can withstand ground settlement and low temperatures, making them the preferred choice for outdoor municipal and long-distance pressure pipelines. PVC pipes are rigid, dimensionally stable and cost-effective. They dominate indoor drainage, sewage systems, electrical conduits, low-pressure water supply and chemical drain systems. PVC pipes are normally connected by adhesive sockets, suitable for fixed installation indoors or shallow burial projects with limited ground movement.

When selecting equipment, buyers should start from target products. If you focus on gas pipes, large-diameter buried water mains or flexible coiled pipes, pick the PE extrusion line. If your main products are rigid drainage pipes, electric conduits and low-cost building plumbing pipes, a PVC twin-screw line is more economical. It is worth noting that one set of standard line cannot switch freely between PE and PVC. If you plan both products, you need two independent lines or customized special modification. Budget, local market demand and certification standards (ISO, ASTM) also need to be considered before final purchase.
